De Graafschap fans cannot uncork the champagne yet. The number two of the Kitchen Champion Division played a draw against Young Ajax (1-1) on Friday evening, so that it can only secure promotion to the premier division next week.
With one round to go, De Graafschap is at 76 points. Go Ahead Eagles (which won 2-1 against NEC) and Almere City (thanks to a 3-1 win over Jong FC Utrecht) have two points less, while NAC Breda after a 2-0 win over MVV also (a small one) has a chance of direct promotion (73 points).
Taylor scores for Young Ajax
Halfway through the first half, De Graafschap, which was certain of promotion in the event of a victory, fell behind against Young Ajax. Ajax player Kenneth Taylor cut out his opponent and shot the ball past goalkeeper Rody de Boer in the far corner.
Taylor’s hit was a fair reflection of the power relations in the opening phase. Young Ajax dominated, although the best chance until that moment was for De Graafschap. A hard bang from Ralf Seuntjens was parried by keeper Daan Reiziger.
