Two days before the opening match of the European Championship, defending champion Portugal last played a so-called goodbye match. In front of empty stands in Lisbon, the 2016 European champion was too strong for Israel 4-0.
The European Championship for Portugal starts on Tuesday against Hungary, the weakest team in the ‘group of death’ on paper. After Hungary, Portugal awaits matches against the winners of the last two world championships: Germany and France.
Just before half time the first goal
Against Israel, the Portuguese created chance after chance, but the opening goal only came in the 42nd minute when Bruno Fernandes worked in a cross from Joao Cancelo.
It was only the first international goal of the Manchester United midfielder since November 2019, who has scored 18 times for his club this season. Two minutes later, Cristiano Ronaldo, who became a superstar at United more than a decade ago, signed for the 2-0.
It was a long wait for goals in the second half. In the 86th minute, Cancelo also scored himself after his assist, Fernandes made it 4-0 in injury time.
