England have closed the group stage of the European Championship with a victory over the Czech Republic. Thanks to the 1-0 victory, the English have become group winners and will also play the next game in London. England’s opponent in the eighth finals is not yet known.
Like England, the Czech Republic already knew prior to the last group match that it could prepare for the eighth finals and may now meet the Orange squad. With four points from three matches, the Czechs are one of the four best numbers three of this European Championship.
The Netherlands now knows that it will either play against the Czech Republic in the eighth finals on Sunday, or against the number three from group F (France, Germany, Portugal or Hungary). That depends on the results of the last group matches, which will be played on Wednesday.
Sterling important again
The English, who were unable to impress this European Championship with one narrow win and one draw, created immediate danger against the Czechs. Sterling had a chance in the second minute. He tried to lob the ball over goalkeeper Tomás Vaclík into the goal, but his effort ended up on the post.
Ten minutes later it was a hit for the team of national coach Gareth Southgate. Jack Grealish gave a perfect pass, which was gratefully headed in by Sterling. It was his second goal this tournament for the Manchester City attacker. He previously scored the winning goal against Croatia (1-0).
