FC Utrecht sure of play-offs, thanks in part to the questionable record goal Van Beek

FC Utrecht may try to qualify for European football via the play-offs. With a home win over Willem II (3-2), René Hake’s team is assured of a place in the top eight, thanks to a very strong second half of the season.

Willem II in turn must continue to be careful, because the Tilburgers are only just above the relegation zone in the premier division.

The battle plan of Gery Vink, who replaced Zeljko Petrovic on Willem II’s bench, who was felled with a hernia, could already be thrown away after three minutes. The frequently rising Django Warmerdam found Sander van de Streek, who viewed the ball on behalf of Utrecht and curled it into the far corner.

Seven own goals

The big shot of the evening was Sven van Beek, who made history just before half time with a header behind his own keeper Arijanet Muric (2-0). No player made more own goals in the premier league than Van Beek.
