Ihattaren completes remarkable transfer: he starts on a rental basis at Jong Ajax

The 19-year-old Ihattaren made the switch to Juventus in August, after he fell into disfavor with PSV coach Roger Schmidt. Juventus immediately leased him to Sampdoria. But he didn’t play in Genoa for the first few months, after which he returned to the Netherlands in October without permission. Much to the ire of Sampdoria’s policy makers.

He has not played any official games since then. He worked with former international Gerald Vanenburg on his fitness in Amsterdam.

Overmars: ‘One of our country’s greatest talents’

FC Utrecht also tried to tempt Ihattaren to return to the Eredivisie, but the choice fell on Ajax. After the departure of David Neres, the team from Amsterdam looked for an offensive reinforcement.

Although Ihattaren has the stamp of a difficult boy, Ajax coach Erik ten Hag and director of football affairs Marc Overmars dare to take it on with him. “Mo Ihattaren is only 19 years old and is considered one of the greatest talents in our country,” says Overmars. “We offer him this opportunity and we are going to help him, but of course it starts with himself and he knows that.”
