NPO boss Leeflang protected because of threats

NPO chairman Frederieke Leeflang is being protected because of threats she has received. A spokesperson for the Dutch Public Broadcasting confirms reporting about this from radio station BNR.

Sources in Hilversum told the makers of the podcast Koster & Van Dijk from BNR that the threats would come from sympathizers of broadcaster Ongehoord Nederland (ON). The NPO does not want to say anything about this, and only wants to say that Leeflang is protected. Since the beginning of this year, she has been the new chairman of the board of directors of the NPO.

fine

The NPO plans to impose a fine on ON because, according to the ombudsman, the broadcaster has “systematically violated” the journalistic code of the national public broadcaster. According to the ombudsman, ON, which was shown on TV for the first time in February, contributes, among other things, to the dissemination of demonstrably incorrect information, without correcting it.

According to the Media Act, a maximum of 15 percent of the budget set for a broadcaster may be withheld. ON receives 3.6 million euros annually, so the maximum fine would be more than half a million euros. ON chairman Karskens spoke of a “frontal attack on the survival of us as a broadcaster and press freedom in the Netherlands” and said he did not agree with the conclusions of the report.
