Nutrition under the microscope: does drinking apple cider vinegar help you lose weight?

In the section Nutrition under the microscope we share a scientific view of nutrition and health. The internet is full of claims about these two broad topics, but is this information correct? We provide clarity with the help of various experts. With Today: Does Drinking Apple Cider Vinegar Help You Lose Weight?

Is losing a few pounds on your list of New Year’s resolutions for 2022? Then you must have read the tip to drink apple cider vinegar. Apple cider vinegar, or cider vinegar, is a vinegar made from fermented apple juice. Drinking this acidic drink is said to aid in weight loss.

Is that right? We asked Iris Groenenberg, expert in the field of nutrition and health at the Nutrition Center.

Lose weight with apple cider vinegar, does it work?

Groenenberg: “There are many myths about losing weight. One of those myths is that apple cider vinegar is said to help with weight loss. Acidic products such as apple cider vinegar, grapefruit juice or lemon juice do not break down fat, that is a myth. There is no scientific evidence that drinking acidic drinks affects fat burning or aids weight loss.”

In addition, according to the nutritionist, drinking these acidic products poses an additional problem: it can cause dental erosion. “Then the tooth enamel dissolves, even if the lemon juice or apple cider vinegar is often diluted with water.”

Other ‘benefits’ of apple cider vinegar

Another benefit that is mentioned when drinking apple cider vinegar is that the drink is said to have a cleansing effect on the body. According to Groenenberg, however, this is also nonsense. “Apple cider vinegar does not help detox. Our body has a natural waste-processing system for cleaning up foreign and potentially toxic substances. This process mainly takes place via the liver. But, for example, your kidneys and gastrointestinal tract also play a role in this processing system. Apple cider vinegar has no effect on that and therefore does not help to detoxify.”

Does apple cider vinegar help with heartburn? “For example, drugs that help people who suffer from heartburn, ensure that the stomach acid becomes less acidic. Apple cider vinegar is an acidic product. As a result, it will not ensure that the stomach acid becomes less acidic. It is very unlikely that apple cider vinegar will help with an upset stomach.”

Successful and permanent weight loss

Apple cider vinegar will not help you lose weight. What does work? Groenenberg: “Change your lifestyle. Eat less, healthier, more varied and sweets and snack not too much and not too often, exercise more and be careful with alcohol. Losing weight may take longer, but adjusting your diet in small steps can help you maintain your new, healthy diet more easily.”
