Nikita van der Vliet, also a circle player, will also be present at the training camp. Partly because of that competition, Freriks would have liked to show himself at the three-country tournament. “I’ve been doing well at my club lately and I would have liked to take that form with me. The more often the national coach you see play, the better of course, but it is no different now.”
In case of a negative test result on April 14, Freriks still wants to join the Orange selection, which will then complete training at Papendal. Until then, she has to keep herself fit. “We have online strength training with the team every other day. The weights are still at my parents’ house, so I have to improvise with bottles of water and chairs. I don’t know if the downstairs neighbors are very happy with it”, Freriks laughs.
Also captain Snelder absent
Besides Freriks, Dutch national team-players Laura van der Heijden, Rinka Duijndam, Kelly Dulfer, Yara ten Holte, Inger Smits and Snelder also have to miss the practice tournament.
“I think it’s really super sour. It makes the process towards the Olympic Games more difficult,” says captain Snelder. In mid-March, the Orange squad had also been together for two exhibition games against Slovenia, but then national coach Mayonnade had to be absent. “Putting the finishing touches between team and trainer is therefore not possible. You end up in a difficult position.”
