Sizzling final round coming after Lille and Sevilla victories in ‘boring’ group G

Beforehand, group G was not the most appealing in this year’s Champions League. But with one round to go, this might be the most exciting of them all.

On Tuesday evening, the French Lille OSC won 1-0 against leader Red Bull Salzburg and thus took over the lead. In Sevilla, the last player Sevilla in turn defeated VfL Wolfsburg 2-0.

Canadian David goldcrest again

Lille, who took office without the injured Sven Botman, had already played 0-0 twice in this Champions League campaign. As the first game against Salzburg ended in a 2-1 defeat, the French knew that only a victory would bring solace.

After more than half an hour, the stadium in Lille exploded when Jonathan David gave the home team the lead. He got the ball right at his feet after some rumbling from veteran Burak Yilmaz and didn’t hesitate for a moment.

It should come as no surprise that David made the goal. The 21-year-old Canadian has already made 10 times in 14 competition matches this season. With the national team, his figures are even more impressive: thanks in part to the 18 hits in 23 appearances, Canada is now on the threshold of the first World Cup since 1986.

Salzburg, which with a victory would be certain of the knockout phase, offered little in return tonight. In fact, the most critical moment of the final phase was probably Maximilian Wöber’s misdirected pass. The former Ajax player escaped unscathed.

Weghorst down against Sevilla

In the other game in this group, Wout Weghorst and VfL Wolfsburg lost 1-0 in Sevilla and dropped to last place in group G. After 12 minutes, Jordán scored the only goal on a pass from veteran Ivan Rakitic. Rafa Mir also made it 2-0 in the 97th minute.

Mickey van de Ven (Wolfsburg) and Karim Rekik (Seville) stayed on the bench for the entire match.

Due to tonight’s results, everything is still possible in group G. In two weeks, Sevilla will travel to Salzburg. Wolfsburg will take on Lille in its own stadium.

Lille and Salzburg only need one point, but they can also miss everything in the event of a defeat.
