Joeri Verlinden hoped to qualify for his third Olympic Games this weekend, but the 33-year-old swimmer has to pass up the OKT in Eindhoven.
He tested positive for the corona virus last Tuesday. In a second test the result turned out to be negative, but because he has mild cold complaints, the tournament doctor still put an end to his participation.
“I am very disappointed,” said the butterfly specialist on social media. “I was looking forward to racing in my own pool and qualifying for my third consecutive Olympic Games there.”
In 2012 Verlinden finished sixth in the final of the 100 meter butterfly and he finished seventh with the relay team in the 4 x 100 meter medley. Four years later in Rio de Janeiro, the Limburger did not reach the final.
Last chance at European Championship
Verlinden will go into quarantine until next week and then start preparations for the European Swimming Championships, which will be held in Budapest from 17 to 23 May. There he has one last chance to swim the Olympic limit and qualify for the Games.
