Unnecessary and undeserved, that’s how Ajax coach Erik ten Hag characterized the European elimination of his team. The team from Amsterdam did not get further than 1-1 at AS Roma on Thursday evening, after the first meeting had already been lost 2-1.
And Ajax could only blame itself for that, Ten Hag also thought. “The best team is not in the semi-finals. That is unfortunate and we can blame ourselves. You have to enforce it yourself and there is the big blame, we will not finish the great chances we create.”
Ten Hag concluded that his team had pushed AS Roma on the defensive. The fact that the Romans were running backwards was the credit of Ajax. “They had no other choice. They wanted to, but that was up to us. Roma did not get a grip on our position play.”
Tadic echoes Ten Hag
Dusan Tadic joined almost the same wording in his coach’s statement. “If you look at both games, the better team has lost”, said the Serbian captain, who thought he would make it 2-0 ten minutes after the break.
