What is the best 46 to 50 inch television? And which one has the best price-quality ratio? NU.nl and the Consumers’ Association provide an answer.
When choosing a new TV, you usually initially look at the format. The correct size depends on the distance between your TV and the sofa. Are you about 3 meters away? Then a TV of 46 to 50 inches is a good size.
Throughout the year, the Consumers’ Association tests TVs of various sizes for, among other things, image and sound quality, ease of use and energy consumption. A total of 186 televisions have now been tested and are widely available.
Manufacturers often enter the market with new models during this period. These are purchased and tested as soon as possible, but that takes time. It may therefore be that new models have been released that have not yet been tested.
Of the 34 TVs tested in the 46 to 50-inch category, an LG model is the Best in the Test. A Samsung television is the Best Buy.
Best in Test: LG OLED48CX6LB
This 4K television has been on the market since 2020. It is LG’s first OLED TV that is smaller than 55 inches.
It is not cheap, but the image quality is fine and comparable to that of larger OLED TVs. The colors look full and natural with a good contrast. Especially in HDR (High Dynamic Range), the TV shows a spectacular picture. The viewing angle is acceptable, although it is smaller than that of its bigger brothers.
The smart TV menu starts up quickly and works nicely. You have many apps such as Netflix, YouTube, Disney + and Apple TV.
The sound is clear and balanced. However, the sound can sound a bit thin because the low tones are a bit on the weak side. You can solve that with the purchase of a good soundbar and possibly a subwoofer.
The TV has four HDMI connections and three USB ports.
Best Buy: Samsung UE50TU7020
If you prefer to spend a little less money, this LED TV from Samsung is a great alternative. This model has also been on the market since 2020.
The image quality of the Samsung cannot match that of the LG, but it is certainly okay. The image is sharp and shows a decent color palette, although it looked a bit too warm compared to other TVs. The contrast is also good, but there is sometimes some loss of detail in dark areas.
The sound is clear and rich. But just like with the Best in the Test, the sound can be a bit thin.
A disadvantage is that this TV is not very energy efficient. Many other TVs in this picture size do that better. The TV also does not have many connections: only two HDMI connections and one USB port.
In this column we write weekly about household and technological appliances that have been tested by the Consumers’ Association. This is a collaboration between the independent editorial staff of NU.nl and the Consumers’ Association.
The Consumers’ Association tests thousands of products every year, together with qualified technicians in specialized laboratories at home and abroad. The products being tested are bought in the store so that they are not pre-manipulated by manufacturers.
New models are tested as soon as possible after introduction. How fast that is differs per product. The Best in Test is the product with the best test rating. This can also be a somewhat older model, because a newer model is not always better. The Best Buy is the product with the best price-quality ratio.
