At the Masters, a short darts tournament with the top 24 in the world, Michael van Gerwen missed the semi-finals. In the quarterfinals, he lost to Englishman Joe Cullen 10-7 in legs in a best-of-19.
Van Gerwen experienced a difficult year in 2021, with a corona infection as the lowest point during the PDC World Cup. As a result, he had to retire without playing in the third round. In the first game at the Masters on Saturday, Van Gerwen won spectacularly against Luke Humphries.
Van Gerwen starts strong
The good feeling had to be continued in the quarterfinals against Cullen, the number eleven on the PDC ranking (Van Gerwen is third). De Brabander started well and broke Cullen right away in the first leg. After five legs it was 3-2 for Van Gerwen.
In the sixth leg, Cullen broke back after a handsome 149 finish. Van Gerwen immediately had a chance to break back, but missed a double with three arrows in his hand. Cullen took advantage and rumbled on to 6-3.
Van Gerwen then continued to miss too many doubles to make the difference. Cullen eventually won quite simply, 10-7.
